Class of 2024 Achievements: Morgan Firth on Supporting Students with Disabilities – News

Morgan Firth is a final-year law student due to graduate in July 2024. This year, Morgan received the Disability Champion Award at the University’s Equality+ Awards.

We caught up with Morgan before graduation to learn more about her work and future plans.

What was the most important moment of your life at university?

With independence, I can find myself, make lifelong friends, travel abroad and experience a different culture.

What do you plan to do after graduation?

I am hoping to find work in a law firm, either as part of a graduate scheme or as a paralegal, to start my qualification journey.

You have been awarded the Disability Champion award. Can you tell us more about it:

I won the award for my work as a disability trainer. As a trainer, I have been actively involved in breaking down barriers around equality, diversity and inclusion. Our team has experienced the journey of getting support from the university first hand, and this experience provides comfort to other students who want the same support.

Winning the award was an incredible experience – it was great to see that our hard work and dedication was recognised as an important part of the University’s work.

Being a disabled trainer was a great opportunity. The staff is so helpful and knowledgeable.

What do you think should change in 10 years in the context of equality, diversity and inclusion?

Normalizing people who don’t fit into that box of “normal.” To understand how important these people are as individuals and not force them to jump through hoops to have the same opportunities as others.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

My first year was unconventional due to Covid. But it gave me the opportunity to really get to know my 13 roommates and nurture those friendships, and also realize that there are people who will help you. I would advise myself to take advantage of every opportunity (especially from University) as a junior.

Morgan’s last words:

I would like to thank my friends and family. But especially my mother, who has been my biggest supporter since day one. From going to open houses with me and supporting every decision I made. She has shaped me into the woman I am today and I will be forever grateful for that.
