‘Super/Man’ Wins Audience Award at HamptonsFilm SummerDocs 2024

Christopher Reeve’s biography ‘Super/Man’ proves just how super the late actor and activist was.

IndieWire can confirm that the documentary “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” has officially won the 2024 HamptonsFilm SummerDocs Series Audience Award following its August 14th screening as part of the program.

Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui co-direct the documentary, which IndieWire has tapped as an Oscar frontrunner, “Super/Man” charts Reeve’s astonishing rise from unknown actor to iconic movie star, including his definitive portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman before he was injured in a near-fatal horseback riding accident in 1995 that paralyzed him from the neck down but intensified his disability rights activism.

The film first screened at the Sundance Film Festival and then at HamptonsFilm and other festivals.

For the SummerDocs screening, executive producer Connor Schell and Reeve’s son, Will Reeve, participated in a Q&A moderated by HamptonsFilm Artistic Director David Nugent and Chairman Emeritus Alec Baldwin.

“Each year, our SummerDocs program aims to highlight powerful stories that challenge perceptions and open hearts and minds, and our audiences responded to ‘Super/Man’ for precisely those reasons,” said HamptonsFilm Artistic Director Nugent. “It was an incredible pleasure to welcome the film, Connor Schell and Will Reeve to the Hamptons and recognize this beautiful tribute to Christopher Reeve with this year’s award.”

Co-directors Bonhôte and Ettedgui explained how the HamptonsFilm SummerDocs Series Audience Award is another way to celebrate Reeves’ life and legacy on the 20th anniversary of his death.

“It’s a true honor to receive this award from the 2024 HamptonsFilm SummerDocs Series. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Christopher Reeve’s death, and our goal has always been to bring his extraordinary story to life for modern audiences — so receiving this Audience Award is a huge thrill for all of us who worked on the film,” the filmmakers said.

The 16th annual SummerDocs Series additionally screened the acclaimed documentaries “Skywalkers: A Love Story” and “War Game.” Many previous SummerDocs Series selections have continued their awards streak and even won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature; SummerDocs Series alumni include “The Eternal Memory,” “Navalny,” “Searching for Sugar Man” and “Summer of Soul.”

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is a DC Studios, HBO Documentary Films and CNN Films presentation in association with Words+Pictures and a Passion Pictures and Misfits Entertainment production in association with Jenco Films. The documentary was written by director Ettedgui and co-written by director Bonhôte and Otto Burnham.

“Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” hits select theaters via Fathom Events on September 21, with a repeat screening on September 25 in honor of Reeve’s birthday.
