A woman who recently traveled by plane said she had difficulty getting into her seat after a man forced his way into her footwell.

Erin Rempel, 21, recently took the hour-and-a-half flight from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, to Edmonton, Alberta, to visit her family.

When she sat down in her assigned middle seat on a Flair Airlines flight, a man sitting next to the window spread his knees wide, invading her personal space and “spreading his knees,” she told Fox News Digital.

“I tried to move his legs back slightly, hoping he would understand my directions,” she said.

In a TikTok video that has been viewed by more than 17 million people, Rempel showed a man’s legs extending into her space and captioned it: “Why does anyone even need that much space???”

Rempel said she eventually reached for something and began pushing her knee more aggressively toward him.

She added that the passenger may or may not have been asleep but was conscious enough to react when she moved his leg away.

She said he “moved and moved to a different position.”

Rempel said she is 6 feet 10 inches tall — and because the “older man” was shorter than her, he didn’t need to be in her space.

Comments under Rempel’s TikTok video revealed mixed opinions, as many said Rempel should speak out, while others said they would simply “cry.”

Some TikTok users asked Rempel why she didn’t immediately pay for a better spot.

However, Rempel told Fox News Digital that the cost of her flight was only $90 and that she was trying to save money.

“To be honest, I didn’t want to upgrade because I wanted to visit family at the last minute and I was on a tight budget, so the flight wasn’t worth spending $20 more,” she said.

One user responded to the story by saying, “Please just take over your space. Take it. It’s yours.”

Another user said: “This makes me claustrophobic.”

Other social media users questioned why she did not speak directly to the other passenger or the flight attendant.

Rempel said she “didn’t think it was worth doing a scene on an hour-and-a-half flight.”

In an emailed statement to Fox News Digital, Flair Airlines said: “We feel it is inappropriate for us to interfere with this disagreement between two customers.”

Rempel said she advises other passengers to contact a flight attendant if such a situation occurs during their trip.

“It’s always a good idea to have a second eye on it,” she said.

Jacqueline Whitmore, a Florida-based etiquette expert, told Fox News Digital in an email that “it’s important to respect everyone’s personal space on the plane.”

“If you plan to lean back, do it slowly (to avoid crushing your knees).”

She added: “This means keeping your hands and feet to yourself and avoiding entering your neighbour’s space.”

Whitmore also suggested that travelers with exceptionally long legs request an aisle seat or a seat with extra legroom.

“If you plan to lean back, do it slowly (to avoid crushing your knees) and check to see if the person sitting behind you is using their table, especially during meals,” she said.

“When watching a movie or listening to music,” she added, “always wear headphones and keep the volume low.”
