BYU President C. Shane Reese sent an email early on the morning of September 5 with an update to members of the academic community regarding the future of BYU Medical School.

First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced new medical school at the end of July 2024

While the specific location of the new building has not yet been announced, President Reese said it will be located on BYU’s campus in Provo.

“This space will house lecture halls and an administrative center,” he wrote in an email.

President Reese explained that the new medical school’s “high-quality, spiritually based” curriculum will give students the opportunity to earn an M.D. He said that while the curriculum is still in the development phase, innovative efforts are being made to reduce the amount of time and money prospective students will have to invest in the program.

The Church’s announcement in late July stated that BYU would not be establishing a new hospital in conjunction with a new medical school. President Reese addressed that statement in his update and explained that clinical training would take place at various off-campus hospitals.

“The discussions between Intermountain Health, the University of Utah and others have been fruitful from a clinical collaboration perspective,” said President Reese.

President Reese stated that the program will focus on examining issues of importance to the Church of Jesus Christ, “including international health issues affecting Church members and the Church’s worldwide humanitarian efforts.”

He added that work is underway to establish a medical advisory team, and the school is still planning its expansion.

In conclusion, President Reese expressed gratitude for the “enthusiasm and support shown” for the ongoing work.

“Jesus Christ healed the sick and ministered to those in need,” said President Reese. “As disciples of Jesus Christ, we believe that BYU Medical School is another way to lift up the children of God.”
