(ABC 6 News) – Out goes the old, in comes the new. The City of Zumbrota is officially breaking ground on a new municipal swimming pool.

And now it’s time to raise money to help make the project happen. On Thursday evening, some local businesses are already making contributions.

For example, there is the News Record. It is a local newspaper in the center of Zumbrota. It is one of the companies that is already helping to raise money.

“I called Brian at City Hall and said if you get this referendum through, I’ll donate $10 for every subscription to Zumbrota,” said Pete Grimsrud, publisher of the News Record.

The largest donation to date came from the Telephone Company, another small business located on Main Street.

“We committed to $100,000 to match that. So we’re just happy to keep the money in the city and support the businesses and the community,” said Austin Anderson, project manager for Telephone Company.

Their generosity is helping to make it possible for the fundraising campaign to begin.

“It’s something that caught our eye and we know it’s an important thing in the community because it brings people in, keeps them and gives them something fun to do in the city,” Anderson said.

City authorities assure that fundraising is running smoothly and is bringing good results.

“We’ve gotten about $330,000 to $331,000, maybe a little more, and there’s a couple hundred dollars already in checks,” said Brian Grudem, Zumbrota city administrator.

The city is looking to raise about $1.3-1.4 million. The donation link is still being created. Keep an eye on this page.
