How it is celebrated in India

In Karnataka, Ganesh Chaturthi, or ‘Ganesh Habba’, is celebrated with great devotion both at home and in public. Here, Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated in many cultural and religious ways. Here, the festival begins a day earlier with prayers to Goddess Gauri, who is the mother of Lord Ganesha. Then, the Ganesha festival begins with a grand party where sweets like payasam, gojju and modakam are made and distributed. The festival begins with the installation of clay statues of Ganesha and the performance of special pujas, bhajans (religious songs) and aartis (lamp rituals). In places like Bengaluru and Mysuru, large, large public pandals are set up to organize cultural events like plays, musical performances and many more. Modak, a sweet delicacy considered to be the favorite delicacy of Lord Ganesha, is prepared and distributed to family and friends. Ancient rituals are very important and the emphasis is on simplicity and dedication.
