Angelina Jolie ‘Overwhelmed’ by Positive Reception for ‘Maria’ (Exclusive)

Angelina Jolie is enjoying enthusiastic reception for her new film Mary.

According to a source for PEOPLE magazine, the 49-year-old Oscar winner is “touched and grateful for all the positive feedback” on the new Pablo Larraín biopic, in which she plays opera singer Maria Callas.

“It’s a moving experience. It was a sensitive project. She’s thrilled,” the source added.

Mary recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival, after which Jolie and Larraín, 48, returned to the United States to present their film at the Telluride Film Festival.

As a Telluride festival insider says, “Angelina looked like she was having a great time surrounded by the film community during the annual class photo. Everyone was trying to get a picture with her.”

Other stars the actress and director has dated include Naomi Watts, Pharrell and John David Washington.

“It’s a return to Telluride for her and she loved going to the movies,” a festival insider added of Jolie.

In addition to chatting with other stars at the festival, Jolie stopped by the city to chat with a handful of film students. She was also seen beaming on two Mary and was met with thunderous applause when Larraín presented it during the shows.

Mary received thunderous standing ovations at the Venice and Telluride festivals — including an eight-minute ovation in Italy that moved Jolie to tears.

The actress spoke about the “nerves” she felt during filming because she was doing festivals, admitting that she had never really sung before playing Callas, and what her connection to the late opera diva was.

“I think the way I related to her might be a surprise — (it was) probably that part of her that is incredibly fragile and doesn’t have the space in the world to be as gentle as she really was, and as emotionally open as she really was,” Jolie said at a press conference in Venice on Thursday, August 29.

She was also asked how she felt about the potential buzz surrounding her Oscar-nominated performance, and she responded that for her, the bar for success was more the reaction of Callas’ fans “and those who love opera.”

“I’m afraid I’ll disappoint them,” Jolie told reporters. “Of course, as far as all the other things go, in my own business, if there’s a response to my work, I’m very grateful.”

She added of Callas: “I share her sensibility more than anything else.”

Netflix has acquired the rights to Mary, but a release date has not yet been announced.
