The Benton Franklin County Health Authority issued five failing grades in food safety inspections at restaurants and other food establishments in the Tri-Cities area conducted Aug. 24-30.

The district health authority’s food safety team assessed 43 inspections positively, with 15 of them receiving the maximum score.

Kabana King’s restaurant in Kennewick was hit by a roach infestation and the deli was closed during an inspection. It was approved to reopen on Wednesday, September 4.

During routine district inspections, businesses or organisations that receive 35 or more points for more serious offences (red) must undergo additional inspections and meet stricter standards in this regard.

To pass a follow-up inspection, vehicles must have fewer than 25 red points and fewer than 10 repeat red points for previous issues.

Obtaining 85 or more red points will result in the establishment being placed on probation until it successfully completes two further inspections, the first of which must take place within 72 hours.

Violations in red are those most likely to cause foodborne illness, such as: failing to keep hot food hot enough or cold food cold enough, failing to wash hands thoroughly, or having bare hands in contact with food.

Blue violations are low-level risk factors related to the cleanliness and physical condition of the facility.

There is no notice of inspections before they begin.

Businesses may conduct separate inspections for business lines with different health risks, such as grocery sales and food preparation delicatessens.

Inspection results are posted online so residents can check the status and details of any violations at individual restaurants or check on other businesses.
