Sports in the spotlight: Jensen Schulz

MANDAN, ND (KFYR) – The Mandan Braves have scored 82 points in their first two games, which is pretty good. A big part of that offensive output was led by senior wide receiver Jensen Schulz.

“He plays well in the open field, makes people not see him, his bounce, the play against Williston where we thought he was going to be on the ground, but he jumps up, uses his hand to keep his balance and then gets up and gains 25 yards,” Mandan head football coach Todd Sheldon said.

“A very good route runner. He understands the offense and the routes. Most importantly, he understands the tendencies of the defense, he understands who he’s paired with in a given play,” Mandan quarterback Hudson Sheldon said.

Like his quarterback, Jensen is also attracting interest from college football programs.

“It was stressful at first, but now a lot of colleges are coming to talk to me. It’s kind of a weight lifted off my chest. I’m excited about the rest of this senior year, hopefully I get more,” said Jensen, a wide receiver/linebacker from Mandan.

Jensen is a two-way player, but seems to prefer one over the other.

“I like both. If I had to pick one, I’d probably say offense. I feel like as a DB I don’t get a lot of action, when I’m on offense I get a lot more,” Jensen said.

“When I’m on offense, I’m just thinking, ‘Run, score, score, score.’ When I’m on defense, I’m just thinking, ‘Do whatever you can to stop them from scoring,'” Jensen said.

Jensen has scored four touchdowns in two weeks and has solidified his place as the top threat in Mandan’s receiving corps.

“It definitely starts in the gym, that’s for sure. I put everything into the gym this year and I’ve really seen the results. Film helps you, it makes you smarter, so you know what’s going on on the field. So it all comes together and it makes the game a lot easier,” Jensen said.

Jensen and the third-place Braves will head east on Friday to face the first-place Sheyenne Mustangs.
