Massive gas outage continues at Palisade Towers in Yonkers, city leaders discuss next steps

New details are emerging about a major outage that left hundreds of people in Yonkers without gas.

It’s been seven days since the roughly 400 people living in Palisade Towers were able to use their stoves. The city and housing authorities now have a clearer picture of what they need to do to fix them.

The outage was caused by a series of leaks in the main gas line, authorities said.

Initially, people living in all the buildings in the community had no hot water, but temporary boilers have since been installed to remedy this.

As for what happens next, city leaders told News 12 they are exploring three options.

One such option is to replace gas with electricity. Another option is to keep gas and repair the damaged line. The third option is to adopt a hybrid solution and use both gas and electricity to some extent.

Whichever path is chosen, housing authority leaders warn it could take some time.

“I wouldn’t want to mislead people into thinking this is going to be solved in the short term. I think the best case scenario is several months,” says Wilson Kimball of the Municipal Housing Authority – City of Yonkers.

Kimball said the city plans to expedite work to fix the problems as quickly as possible.

In the meantime, food deliveries and donations continue daily to various merchants in the neighborhood. The next one is scheduled for Thursday. In addition, hotplates and microwaves have been given to residents.
