Meta sheds light on how it uses Brazilians’ personal data to train its Gen-AI model

Meta’s millions of users often wonder how the social media group uses their data. Concerns about data security and privacy have always been a concern. Now, it seems Meta is here to shed some light on this long-standing issue. Meta is going to let Brazilians know how it plans to use their personal data to train its generative artificial intelligence (AI). Meta made the announcement Tuesday following requests from Brazil’s data protection watchdog.

Brazil’s data protection authority said in a statement that Meta users in the country will now receive email warnings and notifications on Facebook and Instagram. It added that users will be able to reject Meta’s use of their data to train its generative AI.

Brazil vs Meta

In July, Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) initially put a hold on Meta’s new privacy policy, which covered the use of personal data to train AI models. However, the hold was lifted last Friday after Meta agreed to provide required disclosures about its data use.

In addition, in July, Meta took the step of suspending the use of generative AI tools in Brazil. This included tools for creating popular AI-generated stickers on WhatsApp, a platform where Brazil has the second-largest user base. Meta’s decision to suspend these tools comes amid ongoing talks with the ANPD to address concerns from authorities about the implementation and use of generative AI technology.

Asked by Reuters on Tuesday about the possibility of resuming the use of these tools now that the suspension by the ANPD has been lifted, Meta responded by emphasizing that the suspension was a temporary measure, pending negotiations with the ANPD.
