New law prohibits Illinois hotels from offering free personal care products

Under a new law, Illinois hotels will no longer provide guests with free personal care products.

The Small Single-Use Plastic Bottle Act, signed by Gov. JB Pritzker last month, aims to curb excessive plastic use in hotels.

Hotels will no longer be allowed to issue small, single-use plastic bottles containing personal care products to guests staying in their bedrooms or using public hotel toilets.

The act prohibits the sale of shampoos, hair conditioners and bath soaps in plastic bottles or containers smaller than 6 ounces that are not intended for reuse.

The Act will enter into force on 1 July 2025 in hotels with 50 or more rooms and on 1 January 2026 in hotels with fewer than 50 rooms.

However, hotels may provide personal hygiene items free of charge if requested in a location other than guest rooms or public restrooms.

Hotels that violate the law will receive a written warning for the first violation and could be fined up to $500 for each subsequent violation.
