Latino-owned businesses to support Hispanic Heritage Month – The Daily Texan

Austin, where more than 300,000 people identify as Hispanic or Latino, is a vibrant center of Hispanic innovation. With Hispanic Heritage Month approaching, The Daily Texan has compiled a list of Latino-owned businesses that are making a splash in the city.

Drug culture – 9900 S I-35 Frontage Rd Unit O

Offering accessories, clothing and beauty products online, as well as dental jewelry and manicure services, Latina-owned nail studio and salon Dope Culture was founded in 2021. According to websiteCo-founders Abigail Tovar and Lisset Velasquez aim to keep their culture alive by cultivating a space where people feel respected and appreciated. Reservations are available on their website, where they are currently running a special “Summer Bestie Butterflies,” offering matching tooth gem designs for besties all summer long.

Rocheli’s Confectionery – 1212 Chicon St Suite102

Named a Forbes 30 under 30 in 2015, award-winning French-style bakery Rocheli Patisserie offers specialty coffee and pastries in East Austin. Opened by sisters Linda and Nelly Garcia, the bakery serves tea by appointment only Tuesday through Sunday, offering towers of delicate pastries and tea sandwiches. The menu also features French favorites such as cafe au lait, French Press, personalized macarons and birthday cakes. Founded by East Austin native Daniel Hinojosa in 2020, Lift ATX aims to serve the community by providing an affordable and inclusive space for health and wellness. With the motto of “strength in community, community in strength,” the dog-friendly weightlifting gym prioritizes giving back to the community by hosting fundraisers and social gatherings — including the upcoming Pachanga this Saturday, celebrating four years of thriving business. Memberships are sold at their website for $50/month.

Downtown Gabriela and Taquero Mucho – 900 E 7th St and 508 West Ave

Founded by Austin entrepreneur and DJ Gabriela Bucio, Gabriela’s Downtown and Taquero Mucho are staples in Austin for locals and visitors alike. Gabriela’s Downtown serves Michoacán-inspired family recipes and fresh-squeezed drinks daily. Nearby, Taquero Mucho serves pink tacos and pink margaritas. According to its website, Bucio designed the women’s taqueria as a place where female customers can feel loved and empowered. Bucio and her brother Arturo own Gabriela’s Group, a collection of restaurants and entertainment venues that include Revival Coffee and the Mala Vida nightclub.

Friday Frida ATX – different locations

Frida Friday ATX, a monthly market featuring art by women of color, is an offshoot of Las Ofrendas, a local queer and Latinx entrepreneurship that sells handmade accessories and homewares. Founded three years ago by TK Tunchez, FFATX bills itself as working to close the wage gap disproportionately experienced by women of color. They host events like the upcoming Legendary Drag Brunch and Market at The Brewtorium this Sunday. You can also shop at FFATX vendors on the web.
