India’s mixed fortunes at the Paris Paralympics: Highlights and results

Indian Paralympian Amisha narrowly missed out on a medal in the F46 shot put at the ongoing Paris Paralympic Games, finishing 14th with a personal best of 9.25 metres. Despite her strong performance, it wasn’t enough to secure a place on the podium. Her first attempt was her best throw.

The podium in the event was dominated by Noelle Malkamaki of the USA, who set a new world record with a throw of 14.06 meters, Mariia Shpatkivska of Ukraine, who set a regional record with a throw of 12.35 meters to win silver, and Holly Robinson of New Zealand, who secured bronze with a throw of 11.88 meters. In the men’s 49 kg para weightlifting, Parmjeet Kumar of India finished eighth with a best lift of 150 kg. The gold medal went to Jordan Qarada Omar Sami Hamadeh, who lifted 181 kg, followed by Turkey’s Abdullah Kayapinar with a lift of 180 kg to win silver and Vietnamese Le van Cong with a lift of 171 kg to win bronze.

Team India added 21 medals to its tally in this edition of the Paralympics, looking to surpass its previous best of 19 medals from Tokyo 2021. Para athlete Sachin Khilari won silver in the men’s F46 shot put with a throw of 16.32 metres, setting another regional record. Meanwhile, para shooter Avani Lekhara secured India’s first gold in the women’s 10m Air Rifle with a personal best of 249.7 points, while Manish Narwal bagged silver in the men’s 10m Air Pistol SH1. Additional highlights included a bronze medal for Rubina Francis in the women’s 10m Air Pistol SH-1 P2 final and a silver medal for Nishad Kumar in the men’s T47 High Jump with a jump of 2.04 metres.
