The sculpture “The Seven Teachings of Grandfather” will be unveiled Friday in Marquette

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – Marquette unveils a new sculpture installation Friday.

The Seven Teachings of the Grandfather is a work by Anishinaabe artist Jason Quigno.

The sculpture was carved from seven locally sourced rocks to represent each of the Seven Grandfathers and the cultural wisdom they embody.

The stones will be placed in a circle at the base of the new Spear Dock pedestrian pier in Marquette.

Amelia Pruiett, arts and cultural communications coordinator for the city of Marquette, says the sculpture will be the epicenter of the city’s new Coastal Cultural Trail, a project that aims to honor the stories of the community, coastline and local culture, including the area’s Indigenous communities and stories.

“It’s located in a very visible and very active part of our community,” Pruiett said. “… Juxtaposed next to the ore dock, which is a relic of another timeline of our history in Marquette, and being able to engage with all of these different stories and storylines in one place is going to be really interesting.”

The unveiling of the sculpture will take place on Friday from 5.30pm to 6.30pm at the Spear Dock pedestrian pier, south of Ore Dock.

The event will include a song of honour performed by the Summer Cloud Singers and an evening performance and light show on Ore Quay starting at 8:00 p.m.
