Hartalika Teej: History

The term ‘Hartalika’ is derived from two Sanskrit words ‘Harat’ meaning kidnapping and ‘Aalika’ meaning friend. Goddess Parvati, according to the myth, was absorbed in the penance of Lord Shiva after accepting him as her husband. She was kidnapped by her friends and taken to the forest.

Parvati was not yet ready for her father’s proposal to Lord Vishnu. During Hartalika Teej, Parvati made a clay idol of Lord Shiva and worshipped it. Lord Shiva was pleased with her worship and vowed to marry her. Later, Parvati’s father Himalaya also approved the marriage. The wishes of devotees are fulfilled quickly if one fasts during Hartalika Teej.
