The favourites with the best odds before week 2

play

The first week of the college football season has thrown up a few surprises. Sure, we could have expected the SEC to blow away its opponents in the first week, but multiple 60-plus point wins? No one could have predicted that. Plus, a big win for USC, near losses to UCLA and Oregon, and another loss for Florida State were all unexpected shocks that made the weekend even more interesting.

Something else the weekend gave us was a first look at some of the best players in college football. Guys like Quinn Ewers, Carson Beck and Jalen Milroe were all incredible in their Week 1 games, but there’s still a long way to go in the season. While one of them has plenty of time to solidify his place as a Heisman favorite, there’s also plenty of time for some of them to fall off the rankings entirely.

With that in mind, here are the Heisman favorites heading into week two.

HEISMAN ODDS: Who is the favorite to win the 2024 Heisman Trophy?

Odds to win the 2024 Heisman Week 2:

All odds via BetMGM.

  • Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel, +650

While the Ducks’ first game against Idaho didn’t go exactly as planned, Oregon and Gabriel still have plenty of time to bounce back. Gabriel was the clear preseason favorite to win the Heisman, and one game (especially a win) won’t change that. That will hurt his chances, though, and another poor performance could take him out of the running for good. Still, if 380 yards, two touchdowns, and an 80-plus percent completion percentage are any indication of poor play, Gabriel will almost certainly have no problem staying atop the Heisman polls.

  • Georgia QB Carson Beck, +750

There are still people who believe the Heisman Trophy should be awarded to the best player on the best team. Georgia will undoubtedly be one of the best programs in college football this year, and that bodes well for Beck’s Heisman chances. Beck is still projected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. If Georgia goes undefeated and wins the SEC, it will be hard to argue against his case for the Heisman.

Miami’s huge win over Florida in Week 1 had people whispering, wondering if Ward is as good a quarterback as the victory might suggest. Ward was undeniably spectacular in that effort, racking up 385 yards and three touchdowns, but it seems like people may be overthinking the win. Ward was barely a top-10 Heisman candidate before Week 1. Now he’s breaking into the top three. Let’s hold our horses first and see if he can keep up this pace.

  • Mississippi State quarterback Jaxson Dart, +1000

While Jaxson Dart will likely put up some impressive numbers this season due to a relatively easy schedule, he will likely need two big performances against Georgia and Oklahoma if he wants to have a chance at winning the Heisman.

  • Tennessee Nico Iamaleava, +1000

Mobile quarterbacks tend to have a lot more freedom when it comes to Heisman voting. While Iamaleava brings a lot more to the table than just his legs, this is his first season as a starter. Maybe he’s buckling under the pressure, or maybe he’s rising to the occasion.

  • Quinn Ewers, Texas quarterback, +1200

Ewers’ biggest problem has been his accuracy on long balls. If he can improve that aspect of his game, the sky is the limit. Wins over tough opponents like Michigan and Georgia would also help.

  • Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe, +1200

Milroe has elite mobility and doesn’t have the best weapons to throw to. That could lead to one of two outcomes. Either Milroe puts Alabama on his back en route to another strong season, or Milroe falls short of expectations when teams start focusing on him.

  • Will Howard, Ohio State quarterback, +1400

With Ohio State surrounding Kansas State’s Will Howard with incredible weapons, it will be hard to deny his Heisman case if Ohio State remains undefeated while Michigan is without Harbaugh. Howard’s performance against Akron was solid, but left something to be desired. Buckeyes fans were certainly hoping for a little more than 60.7 percent shooting in his first game.

  • Colorado WR/DB Travis Hunter, +1500

As long as Coach Prime is in Colorado, the national spotlight will be on the Buffaloes. If Colorado can sneak into the top 25 by the end of the season and possibly compete for a bowl game, Hunter, the most exciting two-way player in college football, could have a unique claim to the award.

  • Riley Leonard, Notre Dame quarterback, +2000

Notre Dame entered Week 1 against Texas A&M as the underdog. While the game was a closer match than the score would suggest, Notre Dame proved they were not a team to mess around with in their victory. Leonard was not particularly outstanding in Notre Dame’s victory, not throwing a single touchdown pass and completing only 60% of his passes. He will likely need to put in some big performances against teams like USC and Georgia Tech throughout the season. As it stands, Leonard is still a huge underdog.

  • Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders, +2000

Like Hunter, Sanders will be in the spotlight this year, as many believe he could end up as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft if he plays well enough this season. It may be a long shot, but Sanders will have more freedom given Colorado’s prowess in the national media. However, Colorado’s close loss to North Dakota State is not a good sign to start the season.
