1 dead, 2 missing after boating accident in Old Saybrook, Connecticut

One person died after a boating accident in Old Saybrook Monday night, two others are missing and five people are in the hospital. The search for the missing boaters was suspended overnight and resumed Tuesday morning.

According to EnCon police from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, the 31-foot motorboat with nine people on board struck a jetty at the mouth of the Connecticut River around 9:15 p.m. Monday while returning from Block Island.

Several 911 calls were reported about the crash, and rescue crews found the boat half-submerged and significantly damaged.

According to DEEP, one man was found dead on the vessel and six people were taken to a hospital. The operator of the boat is in critical condition, Capt. Keith Williams of the Connecticut Environmental Police said Tuesday morning.

Williams said he believes one person has been released from the hospital. The extent of the injuries to the others was not disclosed.

The investigation is ongoing, but Williams said investigators believe all nine people were friends who took a day trip to Block Island.

The capsized boat was pulled from the river on Tuesday and was recovered from the water at around 11:30 a.m.

Williams said Tuesday morning that the tide was coming in when the boat crashed.

Multiple agencies participated in the search for the missing sailors, including police and fire departments from several nearby towns, a state police dive unit, and a helicopter from the U.S. Coast Guard station on Cape Cod.

Williams said crews were still working in search and rescue mode.
