Trump was convicted of falsifying his business records to conceal hush money his lawyer Michael Cohen paid to Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. Falsifying business records is a misdemeanor under New York state law, but when done to conceal another crime, it becomes a felony. Because Trump’s payment to a third party violated the Federal Election Campaign Act, falsifying his business records to conceal it was a felony under New York state law.
