BEIJING — China has seen a decline in the number of occupational accidents thanks to intensified efforts to ensure workplace safety, according to the Ministry of Emergency Management (MEM).

In the first eight months of this year, the total number of work accidents nationwide dropped by 25.7 percent compared with the same period last year, and the number of serious and major accidents dropped by 45.5 percent, Wang Daoxi, vice minister of the MEM, said at a press conference on Wednesday.

Special campaigns have been carried out to improve the safety of gas vehicles, the safety of electric bicycles and remove obstacles on fire brigade access roads, Wang said. He added that 6.48 million new charging ports have been installed nationwide in residential areas and public open spaces.

Wang said efforts will be made to improve risk assessment and remediation mechanisms and support enterprises in establishing and improving regular self-monitoring and risk mitigation mechanisms.

He added that China also intends to improve the supervision system at the local government level to prevent the risk of major accidents.
